FAQ's

What is Handspun Yarn?

  • It's exactly what it sounds like! It is yarn that has been handspun! Most yarns come from mills, some of which process raw wool -> yarn, and other just spin from cleaned fibre, commonly using automated industrial machines. Handspun yarn is instead spun by hand and turned into yarn! With handspinning you get the chance to create very unique yarns, and play with colours, textures, and blends, as an art that can then be used by fibre artists for their own projects. I usually spin prepped fibres, both natural and dyed, and let the fibre speak to me on how it wants to be spun!

Why should I care about Handspun Yarn?

  • Because it is art! Handspinning can create beautiful one-of-a-kind skeins that you wouldn't be able to buy/dye yourself. Because I am preparing the fibre, spinning each ply, and can use a variety of plying methods, there are many oportunities for a spectrum of potential outcomes. Two spinners could spin the same braid and very easily produce entirely different yarns!

What can I use Handspun Yarn for?

  • Everything! Well-almost. Handspun yarn is great for knitting, crochet, weaving, macrame, rug hooking, embroidery, needlepoint, string art, tapestries......the list could go on and on! Many people use handspun yarn as a contrast colour in colourwork sweaters, but you can also just use it on its own and let it shine! I wouldn't use it for cooking though...or for setting up a tent....but for almost everything else!

Is your yarn pet-free?

  • No, we are a cat-friendly household, so if you are allergic to cats it would probably be best for you to not order my yarn just in case! I cannot guarantee that any of my products are fully cat-free, even if kept away from her. They are free from dogs/other animals though!

How often will you have shop updates?

  • I'd like to do shop updates once a month, but I don't want to make any specific promises! If things get busy, or if fibre acquisitions are delayed, there might not be much for an update exacly within a month, so then I'll just have a larger update during the following month!

What kinds of equipment do you use?

  • Depending on the spin I'll either be using a drop spindle, turkish spindle, or my EEW 6.1! I don't quite have the room right now to have a larger set-up/treadle wheel, but someday I'd like to! I love having the ability to alternate which of my tools I use for different spins too, it's nice to have variety!

Where do you source your fibre?

  • I like to source my fibre locally when I can, at a variety of fibre festivals and sometimes at my local yarn stores, but this is very seasonal and dependant on the events and stock. Outside of in-person events/shops I get most of my fibre online from a variety of other Women-Owned Canadian small businesses! Your business helps me support their businesses!!

Will you dye your own fibre?

  • Maybe !! Currently I do not have quite enough space, but I hope to eventually dive into the world of dyeing and share that with you!

What is your favourite sheep?

  • Hmmmmm. It's hard to choose since they're all so cute! Well I love spinning Polwarth, and Merino is a classic, but I recently got to hang out with a few Babydoll Sheep and they were SO adorable! I hope to spin a few more niche breeds soon!
